Upwork charges freelancers a variable service fee of 0% to 15% on each contract, set per contract and shown before you submit a proposal; most freelancers see around 10%. To find your take-home pay, multiply the client payment by your fee rate and subtract it, or use the calculator above to gross up a target net amount.
What does the Upwork fee calculator do?
Upwork takes a cut of every contract, and the rate is different for everyone. This free calculator works out your take-home pay from a client payment in two ways: enter what the client pays to see the fee and what you keep, or enter the net amount you want and it tells you what to charge so the fee leaves you exactly that.
Current Upwork service fees
Upwork’s freelancer service fee is variable from 0% to 15% per contract (changed in May 2025; the old tiered 20/10/5% system by lifetime billings is gone). Your contract’s rate is shown before you submit a proposal and it locks for that contract. Most freelancers see around 10%. Figures verified against the Upwork help center in October 2026.
The formula
Forward (what will I receive): fee = client payment x your rate, then net = payment – fee.
Reverse (what should I charge): charge = net you want / (1 – your rate). This grosses up the price so the fee lands exactly where you need it.
Worked example
A $1,000 client payment at a 10% contract rate: Upwork takes $100.00 and you receive $900.00. Working backwards: if you want to keep $900.00 net at 10%, charge $1,000.00.
What is not included
Connects spent bidding on the job are not included, and neither are withdrawal or bank fees when you move money out of Upwork. This calculator covers the service fee on the contract only.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my contract’s service fee rate?
Upwork shows the rate for each contract before you submit a proposal. Enter that exact figure into the calculator; the default of 10% is only a starting point.
Why did Upwork move away from the old tiered fees?
In May 2025 Upwork replaced the 20/10/5% lifetime-billings tiers with a variable 0-15% rate set per contract. Your rate now depends on the contract, not on how much you have billed a client over time.
Does the fee apply to bonuses as well?
Yes. The service fee applies to all client payments on the contract, including bonuses. Enter the full payment amount to get the true take-home figure.
Can I just add the fee on top of my price?
That is exactly what the reverse mode does: enter the net amount you want to keep and it calculates the price to charge so the fee leaves you that amount.
Are Connects included in the fee?
No. Connects are a separate cost of bidding and are not part of the service fee, so they are not in these figures.
