Pricing & Profit Tools
Charge enough and keep enough: margin, markup and late-payment maths.
Charge enough, keep enough
Most small businesses do not have a sales problem — they have a pricing problem. Prices set by gut feel, copied from competitors, or calculated on cost while forgetting fees, labour and overhead. The maths of pricing is not difficult, but it has one famous trap: margin and markup are different things, and confusing them quietly gives away profit.
These three tools cover pricing from every angle: margin (what you keep), markup (what you add to cost), and the full end-to-end build from costs to selling price.
Choosing the right tool
- Checking what you keep on current sales? Use the profit margin calculator. Enter revenue, cost of goods sold and operating expenses for gross and net margin — or work backwards from a target margin to a revenue goal.
- Pricing from cost with a simple percentage? Use the markup calculator. It also converts markup to margin and back, so you always know both numbers for any price.
- Pricing a product or service from scratch? Use the business pricing calculator. It layers materials, labour, overhead, packaging, delivery, platform fees and target margin into one defensible selling price.

Margin vs markup, once and for all
| Margin | Markup | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Selling price | Cost |
| Formula | (Price − cost) ÷ price | (Price − cost) ÷ cost |
| 50% of what? | 50% margin → price is double the profit | 50% markup → price is 1.5× cost |
| £28 cost, £42 price | 33.3% margin | 50% markup |
Use markup to build prices from cost; check margin to make sure the business works. Professionals, lenders and buyers all think in margin — always know yours.
