Tax Calculators

Consumption-tax maths for wherever you do business, with rates verified against official sources.

Consumption tax, without the confusion

VAT, GST and sales tax are the taxes most small businesses get wrong — not because the maths is hard, but because the rules change by country, the names change by country, and “just subtract 20%” gives the wrong answer. These three calculators handle the arithmetic for the world’s three systems, with per-country presets and every step of the working shown.

Rates last reviewed: October 2026. Tax rates and thresholds change — always verify against the official source before filing.

Choosing the right tool

  • UK, EU, or most of Africa, the Middle East and Latin America? Use the VAT calculator. VAT is charged at each stage of the supply chain with credits for tax already paid.
  • Australia, India, Canada, Singapore or New Zealand? Use the GST calculator. Same concept as VAT under a different name — but India’s slab system and CGST/SGST split, and Canada’s provincial HST layering, need their own handling.
  • Selling in the United States? Use the sales tax calculator. The US has no national VAT; 45 states levy their own sales tax with local surtaxes layered on top, and five states levy none at all.

If you are unsure which system applies, it is determined by where the supply takes place, not where you live. A UK freelancer invoicing a US client generally charges no UK VAT on the export (check the place-of-supply rules); a US seller shipping to the UK may face UK VAT obligations instead.

The tools

  • vat-calculator — Add VAT to net prices or extract it from gross totals, with per-country standard rates (UK 20%, Germany 19%, Ireland 23% and more) and the correct extraction formula.
  • gst-calculator — GST for Australia (10%), India (slab-aware with CGST/SGST/IGST split), Canada (GST/HST by province), Singapore (9%) and New Zealand (15%).
  • sales-tax-calculator — US state base rates with local-tax notes, both directions (add tax / extract tax), and economic-nexus guidance for online sellers.

Before you charge any of these taxes

The calculators do arithmetic; they do not grant permission. In almost every country you must be registered before you charge VAT or GST — and charging it unregistered can be an offence. Registration thresholds differ enormously: the UK’s is £90,000 of taxable turnover, Australia’s A$75,000, Singapore’s S$1 million, Canada’s C$30,000, India’s ₹20–40 lakh. Check your country’s threshold on the official site linked from each calculator page.
