Etsy fees look small one line at a time, but they stack. On a typical sale you pay a listing fee, a transaction fee and a payment processing fee. This guide works through every fee with real numbers, so you can price knowing what you keep.
Fees last verified: October 2026, against Etsy’s own help pages. Rates last reviewed: October 2026.
What fees does Etsy charge on every sale?
Every Etsy sale carries three core charges: a 0.20 dollar listing fee, a 6.5 percent transaction fee on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and a payment processing fee that varies by country. Depending on where you sell, a regulatory operating fee, currency conversion, or an Offsite Ads fee can also apply.
The three core fees work like this. The listing fee is charged when you list an item, and again when it sells or renews. The transaction fee is Etsy’s commission on the order. The payment processing fee is the cost of taking the payment through Etsy Payments, charged on top of the transaction fee, not instead of it.
Some fees are sale-based, sitting with the sale in your Payment account until the money clears. Others are real-time, coming out of your current balance when charged: listing and renewal fees, Etsy Ads spend, postage labels and subscriptions. When your payout looks smaller than expected, check both groups. Full detail is on Etsy’s fees and taxes help page.
| Fee | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | 0.20 dollars | Per listing, renewal or extra unit |
| Transaction fee | 6.5 percent | Item price plus shipping plus gift wrap |
| Payment processing | Varies by country | Full order total |
| Regulatory operating fee | 0.05 to 1.97 percent | Item price plus shipping, nine countries |
| Currency conversion | 2.5 percent | Only when currencies differ |
| Offsite Ads | 12 or 15 percent | Attributed ad sales only |
What does Etsy take from a typical order?
On a typical United States order of 46 dollars, Etsy takes 4.82 dollars in core fees before any advertising, leaving 41.18 dollars before your product, packaging and postage costs. That is an effective rate of about 10.5 percent, and the same order costs far more if it came through an Offsite Ad.
A buyer pays 40 dollars for an item plus 6 dollars shipping, so the order total is 46 dollars.
| Fee | Working | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | Fixed per item | 0.20 dollars |
| Transaction fee | 6.5 percent of 46 dollars | 2.99 dollars |
| Payment processing (US) | 3 percent of 46 dollars plus 0.25 dollars | 1.63 dollars |
| Total core fees | 0.20 + 2.99 + 1.63 | 4.82 dollars |
| Left before product costs | 46.00 – 4.82 | 41.18 dollars |
The same order looks very different for a United Kingdom seller. Take an item at 25 pounds plus 3.50 pounds postage, an order total of 28.50 pounds. The transaction fee is 6.5 percent of 28.50 pounds, which is 1.85 pounds. Payment processing is 4 percent of 28.50 pounds plus 0.20 pounds, which is 1.34 pounds. The regulatory operating fee is 0.48 percent of 28.50 pounds, which is 0.14 pounds. The listing fee is 0.20 dollars converted to pounds, about 0.15 pounds, and the exact amount moves with the exchange rate. Added together, the fees are about 3.48 pounds, leaving 25.02 pounds before product costs, an effective rate of about 12.2 percent.
There is one more line for many United Kingdom sellers. If you are not VAT registered, Etsy adds 20 percent VAT to its own fees, a charge on Etsy’s fees, not on your sale. On the example above, 20 percent of 3.48 pounds is about 0.70 pounds, taking total fees to about 4.18 pounds. If you are VAT registered and have added your VAT number to your account, Etsy does not add that VAT.
Watch out: the transaction fee applies to the shipping you charge, not just the item price. Charging 6 dollars shipping does not pass 6 dollars to you untouched, so build fees on the full order total into every price.
How much do Etsy payment processing fees vary by country?
Payment processing is charged on the full order total, including shipping and any sales tax, and the rate depends on where your bank account sits. United States sellers pay 3 percent plus 25 cents, United Kingdom sellers pay 4 percent plus 20 pence, and most eurozone sellers pay 4 percent plus 30 cents per order.
Etsy publishes the full table on its payment processing fees help page.
| Bank account location | Processing fee per order |
|---|---|
| United States | 3 percent + 0.25 dollars |
| United Kingdom | 4 percent + 0.20 pounds |
| Eurozone | 4 percent + 0.30 euros |
| Canada, domestic or US orders | 3 percent + 0.25 Canadian dollars |
| Australia, domestic orders | 3 percent + 0.25 Australian dollars |
If you refund a sale made through Etsy Payments, your payment processing fee is credited back in proportion to the refund, so a full refund does not leave you paying processing on money you returned.
What is the regulatory operating fee, and do you pay it?
The regulatory operating fee is a small extra percentage Etsy charges sellers in nine countries to cover the higher cost of operating under local digital services rules. It is charged on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and United States sellers do not pay it at all.
Etsy’s current page lists nine countries and rates: Canada 0.50 percent, France 1.14 percent, Hungary 1.97 percent, India 0.05 percent, Italy 0.80 percent, Spain 0.88 percent, Türkiye 1.67 percent, the United Kingdom 0.48 percent, and Vietnam 1.24 percent. The fee is charged on the same base as the transaction fee, so it compounds with it. The full list is on Etsy’s regulatory operating fee help page.
Watch out: many older guides still show the United Kingdom rate as 0.32 percent. Etsy’s current page shows 0.48 percent. If your spreadsheet still uses 0.32 percent, every United Kingdom order in it is understated. Check Etsy’s page, not a ranking blog, before you trust a rate.
How do Offsite Ads and Share and Save change what you keep?
Offsite Ads and Share and Save pull in opposite directions: an Offsite Ad sale costs you an extra 12 or 15 percent, while a sale you drive yourself through a Share and Save link earns you a 4 percent refund. On the same order, that difference can swing what you keep by more than a fifth of the order value.
Offsite Ads is Etsy advertising your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Bing and partner sites. You pay nothing unless a click leads to a purchase within 30 days, and then the fee applies to the whole order. Shops that have made less than 10,000 dollars in any consecutive 365-day period pay 15 percent and can opt out. Shops that have reached 10,000 dollars pay 12 percent and cannot opt out. The fee for any single order is capped at 100 dollars. Detail is on Etsy’s Offsite Ads help page.
Share and Save works the other way. When you drive your own traffic through a trackable shop link and the buyer orders within 30 days of clicking it, Etsy refunds 4 percent of the eligible order total to your Payment account. Check the Share and Save page for any current promotional rate. The standard 4 percent is the figure to use in your pricing. See Etsy’s Share and Save help page.
On the same 46 dollar order, where core fees are 4.82 dollars:
| How the buyer found you | Extra fee or refund | Total fees | You keep before product costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic or direct Etsy traffic | None | 4.82 dollars | 41.18 dollars |
| Offsite Ad, under 10,000 dollars tier | 15 percent of 46 dollars = 6.90 dollars | 11.72 dollars | 34.28 dollars |
| Your Share and Save link | 4 percent refund = 1.84 dollars back | 2.98 dollars | 43.02 dollars |
The swing between the Offsite Ad row and the Share and Save row is 8.74 dollars on one 46 dollar order. That is why two sellers with identical products and prices can report very different profits: who brought the buyer changes the outcome. If you are under the 10,000 dollar threshold and thinking about opting out of Offsite Ads, weigh the fees you save against the sales you would lose, because an Offsite sale at 25.5 percent in total fees still beats no sale at all.
What optional Etsy costs should you budget for?
Beyond the per-sale fees, budget for a one-time shop set-up fee, optional subscriptions, advertising spend, and postage labels. None of these is required to open a shop, but each one lands in your Payment account, so an unplanned subscription or ad budget can quietly shrink a thin margin.
Opening a shop carries a one-time, non-refundable set-up fee. The amount varies by location and is shown during set-up, so you will see your exact figure before you commit. There is no monthly fee for a standard Etsy shop after that.
Etsy Plus costs 10 dollars a month and includes 15 listing credits and 5 dollars of Etsy Ads credit each month, . The credits do not roll over, so Plus only pays for itself if you actually use them. Pattern, Etsy’s standalone website builder, is a separate subscription at about 15 dollars a month after its trial, and it puts you in charge of driving your own traffic. Neither subscription cuts your transaction or processing fees, and neither improves your search ranking, so buy them for the tools, not for a fee discount.
Etsy Ads is different from Offsite Ads: it promotes your listings inside Etsy’s own search results on a pay-per-click basis, and you set the daily budget. Postage labels bought through Etsy are charged at the carrier rate you select. Non-United States sellers shipping to United States buyers should also check Etsy’s current import-duty rules before pricing.
Tip: if your listing currency differs from your payout currency, Etsy charges 2.5 percent to convert the funds. Listing in the same currency as your bank account removes that line entirely.
How do you price a product so Etsy fees do not eat your profit?
Price backwards from the amount you need to keep: add your product, packaging and postage costs to your target profit, then divide by one minus your effective fee rate. That gives you the list price that leaves your target intact after Etsy takes its cut, before you round it to a sensible selling price.
Work it through. Suppose your product, packaging and postage cost 12 dollars and you want 15 dollars profit, so you need to keep 27 dollars. As a United States seller with an effective core fee rate of about 10.5 percent, divide 27 dollars by 0.895, which gives 30.17 dollars. As a United Kingdom seller at about 12.2 percent, divide 27 pounds by 0.878, which gives 30.75 pounds. The formula is an approximation, because fixed fees do not scale exactly with price, so run the exact fee lines on your final price before you publish it. LancerBill’s Etsy fee calculator does that arithmetic for you.
Low-priced items need the most care, because the fixed parts of the fees bite hardest there. On a United States sale, the fixed 0.20 dollar listing fee plus the 0.25 dollar processing amount is 0.45 dollars before any percentage is charged:
| Order total (US) | Total core fees | Fee share of the order |
|---|---|---|
| 5 dollars | 0.20 + 0.33 + 0.40 = 0.93 dollars | 18.5 percent |
| 10 dollars | 0.20 + 0.65 + 0.55 = 1.40 dollars | 14.0 percent |
| 25 dollars | 0.20 + 1.63 + 1.00 = 2.83 dollars | 11.3 percent |
| 50 dollars | 0.20 + 3.25 + 1.75 = 5.20 dollars | 10.4 percent |
Three habits protect a handmade margin. First, price the fee stack into every product from day one, using the full order total including shipping. Second, check your margin on LancerBill’s profit margin calculator after fees, not before. Third, compare your fee stack with other platforms in our freelance platform fees comparison and our Stripe fees guide. If you sell handmade goods, our guide to pricing handmade products and LancerBill’s business pricing calculator will help you turn the fee-inclusive price into a full product price.
Key takeaways
- Every sale pays three core fees: a 0.20 dollar listing fee, a 6.5 percent transaction fee, and a country-variable processing fee.
- A typical United States order loses about 10.5 percent to core fees, and a United Kingdom order about 12.2 percent.
- Offsite Ads add 12 or 15 percent on attributed sales, capped at 100 dollars per order, while Share and Save refunds 4 percent on sales you drive.
- United Kingdom sellers pay a 0.48 percent regulatory operating fee, and older guides showing 0.32 percent are out of date.
- Price backwards from the amount you need to keep, and check low-priced items hardest, because fixed fees take a bigger share of small orders.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage does Etsy take from each sale?
There is no single percentage, because the stack depends on your country and on how the buyer found you. A typical United States sale loses about 10.5 percent to core fees, and a typical United Kingdom sale about 12.2 percent before VAT on fees. Add 12 or 15 percent for an Offsite Ad sale, or subtract a 4 percent Share and Save refund for a sale you drove yourself.
Is the Etsy listing fee charged even if nothing sells?
Yes. The 0.20 dollar listing fee is charged when you create the listing, and listings expire after four months. Renewal costs another 0.20 dollars, and selling an extra quantity from a multi-quantity listing triggers another 0.20 dollar fee for that unit. Editing a listing is free.
Can you opt out of Offsite Ads?
Yes, but only while your shop has made less than 10,000 dollars in any consecutive 365-day period. Once you reach 10,000 dollars, you pay the discounted 12 percent rate and participation becomes mandatory.
Does Etsy charge VAT on its fees in the United Kingdom?
If you are not VAT registered, Etsy adds 20 percent UK VAT to its own seller fees. If you are VAT registered and have added your VAT number to your account, Etsy does not add that VAT. This is separate from any VAT on the goods you sell.
Do you pay Etsy fees on shipping?
Yes. The 6.5 percent transaction fee applies to the item price plus shipping plus gift wrap, and the payment processing fee is charged on the full order total including shipping. The regulatory operating fee is also charged on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap.
What is the cheapest way to reduce Etsy fees?
Join Share and Save and drive your own traffic through your trackable link, which earns a 4 percent refund on eligible orders. List in the same currency as your bank account to avoid the 2.5 percent conversion fee. Beyond that, build the full fee stack into every price before you list.
