How much does Stripe take from a payment? Standard UK online card pricing is 1.5% plus £0.20 per charge, so a £100 charge on a UK card costs £1.70 and you receive £98.30. EEA cards cost 2.5% plus £0.20 and international cards 3.15% plus £0.20, with an optional 2% currency conversion fee on top.
What does the Stripe fee calculator do?
Stripe’s UK pricing depends on where your customer’s card was issued, and there is an optional currency conversion fee on top. This free calculator covers every combination: enter a charge to see the fee and your net, or enter the net you want and it works out the price to set.
Current Stripe UK fees
Standard UK online card rates: UK cards 1.5% + £0.20, EEA cards 2.5% + £0.20, international cards 3.15% + £0.20. Tick the currency conversion box to add the +2% conversion fee. This calculator is GBP only. Figures verified against Stripe UK pricing in October 2026.
The formula
Forward (what will I receive): fee = charge x rate + £0.20, then net = charge – fee.
Reverse (what should I charge): charge = (net you want + £0.20) / (1 – rate). The fixed 20p is grossed up along with the percentage.
Worked example
A £100 charge on a UK card: Stripe takes £1.70 and you receive £98.30. On an international card (3.15%): the fee is £3.35 and you receive £96.65. Working backwards: to keep £98.30 net on a UK card, charge £100.00.
What is not included
In-person (terminal), invoicing and platform-specific Stripe pricing can differ from these standard online rates. Check your Stripe dashboard for the exact rates on your account.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know where my customer’s card was issued?
Your Stripe dashboard shows the card’s country on each payment. Most UK freelancers billing UK clients will use the UK card rate.
When does the 2% currency conversion apply?
When Stripe settles the payment into a different currency than the one charged, for example a USD charge paid out to your GBP balance. Tick the box only in that case.
Can I pass the Stripe fee on to the customer?
Use the reverse mode: enter the net amount you want to receive and the calculator gives you the charge amount that leaves you exactly that after the fee.
Are these rates the same for invoices sent through Stripe?
Stripe has separate pricing for some products such as invoicing and terminals. This calculator uses the standard online card rates; check your dashboard for product-specific pricing.
Does Stripe charge anything else monthly?
Stripe has no monthly fee on the standard pay-as-you-go pricing used here, just the per-transaction fee. Optional add-ons are billed separately.
